Starring: Song Joong Ki, Jeon Yeo Bin, Ok Taec Yeon, Kim Yeo Jin, Jo Han Chul, Kwak Dong Yeon
Summary: Working as a consigliere for an Italian Mafia group, Vincenzo Cassano (Song Joongki) fled back to South Korea after being caught in between the mafia wars. As he returned back to South Korea, he stayed in Geumga plaza, which was slated to be demolished due to a conglomerate taking over the plot of land for redevelopment. The drama continues with Vincenzo pitting against the conglomerate with the help of the residents from Geumga Plaza.
PLOT: Vincenzo’s story plot is the most badass amongst all the revenge genre K-dramas that I had seen so far. While the drama could maintain the serious tone throughout the entire series since Vincenzo is a consigliere, there were many comedic moments, especially when it involves Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Bin).
The final episode took the interpretation of serving revenge up cold to a whole new level. While Vincenzo was a genre that I like, it was still difficult to accept the drama at times because of Vincenzo’s choices. How he dealt with situations and how he took revenge against someone were very extreme at times.
CHARACTERS: As someone who grew up and lived in the mafia world, Vincenzo was someone with a lot of survival instincts and of course, evil enough to maintain his position as the consigliere. He had shown signs of caring for other humans as he lived in Geumga Plaza, which was something that as expected. For the female lead, Hong Cha Young, I felt that the character development was lacking, and it was definitely hard to like her. I personally felt that the other supporting characters character development was better than hers.
One of my personal supporting character would be Jang Han Seo (Kwak Dong Yeon) as I felt he had the most impactful character development through the entire series.
ACTING: I don’t deny that I started watching this drama purely for Song Joongki, but overall the drama had casted very good Actors and Actresses. Apart from Song Joongki’s explosive acting here (which I felt was even better than DOTS), I personally thought that Ok Taec Yeon’s acting was amazing here too as the main antagonist. I can’t recalled if I watched his other works before, but his acting in Vincenzo was definitely worth mentioning. The other characters were amazing as well, such as Kim Yeo Jin, Kwak Dong Yeon etc. For the case of Jeon Yeo Bin, I thought it was a little awkward at first, but it did get better as the drama progresses.
OST: My favorite OST from this drama would have to be Adrenaline by Solar (MAMAMOO). I personally thought her voice was very suitable for this drama, with the noir concept and all.
If you do like revenge dramas with some light-hearted moments, this drama comes highly recommended. Of course, please do bear in mind there a few extreme scenes found in this series, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Vincenzo is available on Netflix.
